In the Book of Ruth, we’re introduced to Elimelech, the man who took his family from Bethlehem to Moab to escape a severe famine. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse for Elimelech; as the text notes, he died in Moab, leaving behind his wife Naomi and their two sons, Mahlon and Chilion.

Elimelech's decision to move signifies a heavy hardship in Israel at this time—a famine severe enough that it warranted leaving their homeland, creating dire consequences that would echo throughout Naomi and Ruth's lives. His journey to Moab speaks to the desperation faced by many Israelites; they were willing to risk personal safety and the ties of community to just survive.

Interestingly, Moab was often seen as a place of hardship for the Israelites because of historical rivalries, going back to the time of Abraham and Lot. Yet, through terrible circumstances, we also see beautifully woven threads of providence in Ruth's eventual loyalty to Naomi and eventual place in the lineage of David. Ruth, a Moabite, highlights how love and loyalty can bridge divides.

After experiencing the depths of loss, we witness an extraordinary transformation and an unbreakable bond.
